Reminisce: Nigeria's Current Most Lewd Artiste?

In an industry which is fast becoming saturated with nudity and sexual expressiveness as a mode of trending and gaining widespread acceptance and recognition, it is not surprising that many upcoming artiste albeit, more significantly established artistes now prefer to showcase over the top sexuality through their lyrics and music visuals as a means of carving a niche for themselves in the industry.
From MAHEEDA's Sexy Bad Girl to CYNTHIA MORGAN's German Juice to JHYBO's Lomo and even the infamous OLAMIDE, PHYNO and LIL KESH's Ladi, it is evident that there is a casual vibe about how "dirty" one can make their music and get away with it and even get more "love" from it.
However in this genre of lewd music, one name is beginning to stand out. Without resort to his old works, let's talk about the most recent offerings like "TESOJUE" with a lot of sexually driven lyrics and an 18+ video to "SKILASHII" and most recently "KPOMO" which caps it all, it seems REMINISCE is fast taking up the crown as Nigeria's most lewd rapper and musician and this new found love for been "raw" seems to be paying the bills as he is getting more recognition these days and isn't relenting.
Is there any other artiste there who is dropping more 'matured content' materials than REMINISCE? Funny enough, it seems we are the most hypocritical people on earth, as we enjoy more of these songs and videos with 'mature content' rather than the normal hip-hop tunes from REMINISCE. Well as long as it pays and works for him, who are we to judge. But then a certain ease has to be taken with the way such contents keep been released by REMINISCE, it could get effing boring! Or is it getting? Well, I'll drop my pen at this juncture, and I would love to know if you agree with me that REMINISCE is officially Nigeria's most lewd artiste of 2015.

Top 5 Music Artistes In The University Of Port Harcourt

Uniport is notable for having bred some of the top names in the entertainment industry and this includes notable people like Muma Gee, Tekno, Evelle, Retta, Lancelot Imausuen , Victor Osuagwu, Monalisa Chinda, Hilda Dokubo, Igbo Koko, Yul Edochie, Charles Inojie, Francis Dure, Andre Blaze etc.
And it is worthy of note that a new generation of notable entrants and personalities of the Nigerian entertainment scene will surface from this institution and it is on this note that a research has been carried out on the top 5 musicians currently in Uniport who should be watched out for in the Nigerian music industry.

1. Timi Kay The 22 year old is an upcoming PH City rapper who has been making lowkey waves around the Port Harcourt underground scene. You might remember him recently as the person who featured two of the #Aluu4 victims Tipsy (Lloyd) and Big L (Ugbonna) on the infamous single; Heart of the City. Also, a student of Uniport, this rapper also appears on Leriq's groundbreaking album and is one of Uniport biggest imports in the making.

2.Forbz Zhilah This handsome Mechanical Engineering student who is currently under the management of Creptunes Recording is a well recognized face in the University of Port Harcourt's music scenes as he has performed alongside notable names like Ice Prince. He has also had collaborations with top music acts like SolidStar and he most recently appeared in the Uniport Cypher as well as dropped a latest video for his smash single "If I Hear". He is definitely one to watch out for.

3. Onosz -This Uniport student is undoubtedly a pinnacle of vocal talent and his 'singability' has taken him close to the top as he has had collaborations with Burnaboy(Smoke some weed), Timi Kay, Deewone. His hit single , "Circulate" is still been aired in radio Stations and on the streets of PH city. Most recently his biggest song is "Party like Fela".

4. Andy Blaze -This singer has been probably Uniport's most controversial singer as he lays claim to the "boomba" trademark which many believe is Patoranking's. With a single "Adam" this student of History and Diplomatic Studies has already made waves worthy of mention in Uniport and is on course for bigger things in the Nigerian music scene in the future. He also has a latest singing which is a cover for "post to be" titled "Go Hard".

5. Elvis Grey -Elvis Grey is another budding talent from Uniport and he is signed to AY the comedian's record label - "Premium Music" and he also doubles as a producer. His song "oga at the top" and "kilishi" are still major hits. Most recently his songs Linda Ikeji and Killing me softly featuring Timaya have given him more popularity amongst Nigerian music lovers. The 28 year old is a student of Geology. Other notable mentions are - Benjizxy, Sam Kay, Excess Boy, Bash, Supa Swank, Skillzxx, Hollaboi, TimiBlaze etc

The Hypocrisy Of Nigerians : Castigating Nigeria's But Accepting South Africa's Hip-Hop

"It just cannot work here. Its not commercial enough. Abeg we no fit dance to this one" This are parts of the many excuses most music lovers in this country often give when faced with the question of a Hardcore Hip-hop song making the waves. It is rather sad that great lyricists like Modenine, Boogey, Kahli Abdu etc do not get deserving accolades, praise and airtime for the kind of music they do as people say they are too hardcore and the acceptance of their Music into the Nigerian market has been always extremely poor. I can't barely recall seeing a Mode9 video been played more than thrice on Music Tv Channels like Soundcity, Nigezie, Hip Tv etc but then once the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana, Anatii, AKA, Da Les etc drop a new song, and by this I mean "core" hip hop tune, our TV stations embrace them and play it a lot, our radio stations now have South African songs on their charts. This happens, nevertheless while our own "core" hip-hop songs are ignored and not appreciated. Recently an upcoming artiste, Ola Dips sang about this as he bared out his pains on this situation. Please do not get me wrong as I find nothing wrong with the growth of South African music in our country as I have to admit most of their songs are top notch but then isn't it mere hypocrisy and almost another afro-neo-slave mentality that we cannot support ours but easily accept other's?

Why Burna Boy Isn't Getting The Awards And Accolades...

Burna Boy whose real name is Damini Ogulu broke into the Nigerian Music limelight in 2012 with "Like to Party" having previously taken over the Port Harcourt music industry with singles like "Abeg Abeg Abeg" and "Wombolombo" and he has not looked back ever since.
3 Years in the limelight and he is already a household name and although he has dropped countless chart-dropping singles, there is no denying the fact that he has a lower than appropriate number of awards and accolades for it.
It is rather shocking that Burna Boy's Nigerian Entertainment Award of 2013 Award as Best New Act Of the Year is the only notable award he has won as an artiste despite the glaring evidence of his songs' success and popularity across the continent.
He contentiously lost out at the 2013 Headies to Sean Tizzle for the "Next Rated Category" and most recently MTV Africa's snub of his efforts in their 2015 awards nominations list was one the artiste couldn't stomach anymore and he voiced out his frustrations. More surprising was the fact that these days he seems more of a South African artiste considering the amount of time he spends over there and 80% of his collaborations for sometime now has been with South African artistes. So, if MTV was pro-SA they should have atleast given him a nomination.
He has been nominated in the Best Reggae/Dancehall category at this year's Headies and one cannot securely place a bet on him winning that award this year considering the opposition he faces in that category and considering the fact that acts like Patoranking and Cynthia Morgan have been busy getting to the nigerian "Streets" and solidifying their spots in the nigerian industry with songs, performances and collaborations while Burna Boy has been busy trying to break more into the South African market who nevertheless seem not to be giving him that much recognition. Let's all hope Burna boy re-strategizes, re-evaluates and re-structure his Music offerings and his appeal to the Nigerian audience, also if possible employs the alleged 'man know man' certain artistes use to gain recognition because his kind of music which is uniquely styled deserves more accolades than he gets. He is definitely not one who deserves to be the Nigerian version of "R'Kelly and a Grammy award".

Top 5 Music Labels That Influenced The Nigerian Music Scene In 2015

1. G-WorldWide Entertainment - This label was shot into the limelight this year after the huge success of its act Kiss Daniels' late 2014 released single "Woju" in the first quarter of 2015. With a star-studded remix which had A-listers Davido and Tiwa Savage on it, a street anthem was born, a 'banging' tune one could not easily hate and if "Woju" didn't hit it for anyone, "Laye" definitely did. Just like Davido, Kiss Daniels single-handedly put this label on the map this year and one can only see the future getting brighter for this label considering the talent of another of its acts- SugarBoy. Raba which is a collaborative effort between the aforementioned acts and DJ Shabsy is already a fan favourite and has hit it on certain charts this year and this gives the label the tag of one notable for a mention as an influential record label in the Nigerian music scene this year.

2. HKN Gang - Certain labels have just a single artiste who does all the "push" for them and although Danagog through 'Koba' and 'Pelumo' tried to be the other shining light in the label it is visibly evident that Davido's collaborations, headlines and most importantly singles like Fans Mi, The Sound and most recently "Dodo" was the necessary antidote the HKN music group needed to avoid falling below the standards of making an impact in the Nigerian music scene this yea
r and at such is worthy of having a mention in this list.

3. FiveStar Music : Owned by Nigerian business Mogul, E-Money, this label was host to the biggest celebrity 'stunt' of the year as 'Skibii's death stunt' was the most trending occurrent of the nigerian music scene. However this label has this year churned out the biggest 'beer parlour' song of the year. "After the reggae play the blues, the blues the blues!" With Harrysong and KCee also dropping some chart friendly singles like Ofeshe and Turn by Turn respectively during the course of the year, this label has been one at the forefront of happenings and trends in the Nigerian music scene in 2015.

4. MAVIN RECORDS - Formed in 2012, the mavin group has unsurprisingly moved its way to the top as the foremost music group in the country. Headed by Donjazzy and home to acts like Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Di'ja, D'Prince, Dr Sid, Tiwa Savage and producers like Altims & Babyfresh, the MAVINS has been the label behind top hits like "Godwin" "Awww" "Katapot" "Darling Darling" "Oga Titus" which have all garnered huge success in popularity and acceptance in the Nigerian music scene of 2015. With notable collaborations like "Gift(iyanya)" "I concur(Timaya)" featuring Donjazzy, "Woju remix(Kiss Daniels)" "Gbemileke(Skuki)" etc it is not difficult to see why this label is one of the most influential records on the Nigerian Music scene for the year 2015 as their artistes have made notable strides in the industry.

5.YBNL Records - This 'movement' as its foremost act 'Olamide' prefers to refer to it has been arguably the biggest label in Nigeria this year. Almost no single month has gone by without a chart topping single dropping from any act in this label. From Lil Kesh's Gbese, Efejoku to Olamide's Bobo, Lagos Boys to Adekunle Gold's Orente, Sade and incredible features (olamide is nigeria's most featured artiste of 2015) on which this label's acts have excelled it is rather deserving that this label takes the top spot on this list.

Phyno : Connect (Song Review)

Phyno's latest offering 'Connect' sees the 'King of The East' deviate from his Rap style into a more versatile showing of his singing and 'pop prowess'. When I first got to know Phyno in 2012 from the song "Can't you see", I could have sworn I enjoyed listening to him sing rather than rap but that nevertheless takes nothing away from his incredulous talent when it comes to rapping.
That aside, this latest offering from the PentHauze frontman is yet another single following the success of Nme N which shows how incredibly talented 'Chibuzor' is. My favourite line in this song has to be the part where he says 'when you look too much at breasts it could make you go mad' LOL! Cheesy but yet humorous following an appealing rhythmic vibe,
'Connect' is one tune that will surely create the best grooviness in any eastern bar, fraternity gathering or ballers' groove. Much more credit has to go to T-Spize for this fantabulous instrumental with perfectly syncs with phyno's rendition of his love for business progress! I rate this jam 8/10

Adekunle Gold: The Dark-Horse in Olamide's YBNL Label

Adekunle Kosoko a.k.a Adekunle Gold has been one of the breakthrough artistes of this year. The handsome ebony-skinned vocalist who rose into limelight following the wide acceptance of his single "Sade" was born into a royal family of Lagos.

Sade which was originally written for a girl who rejected Adekunle's dating proposal has turned out to be the perfect indigenous "marry me" song of the year and it owes this largely to the contribution of YBNL boss Olamide's effort into promoting the debut effort from his Record Label's act despite it been a cover song for a One Direction song.

Considering the efforts and promotion YBNL has put towards pushing its foremost acts , Olamide and Lil Kesh it is unsurprising to see that they are arguably the biggest group in Nigeria or closely following the Mavins Records.
Also on the continent, YBNL is a well known music group but they are yet to fully explore the global market in terms of sales, ratings, recognition and collaborations. I cannot recall if any of the label's acts have been nominated for the BET's, MTV's and there is yet to be any notable international collaboration with an international artiste.
This is where Adekunle Gold comes in. In a label where the style of its two foremost artistes is almost all crafted for just the Nigerian market, Adekunle Gold's seems to be the dark-horse in the label whose style of Music would appeal more to the international audience for recognition and acceptance despite language barriers as he totally deviates from the 'hit-of-the-moment' kind of music ,Olamide and Lil Kesh makes into a more matured, all audience friendly and evergreen kind of Music which makes him unique and stand out from other Music revelations this year.
He does not make music to play to the crowd's needs, he makes Music which the crowd would finally crave for. Music which lyrics can be dissected and still in it one would find realism, perfect storylines and a concrete meaning. No insult intended towards 'King Baddo' himself as well as 'Keshi' but Adekunle Gold seems to be the only act in the label whose style of music is most meaningful and has evergreen capabilities.
This been said, it is rather important the label focuses more resources on the singer and with the kind of 'love' he gets from music lovers, he might just be the artiste whose kind of music shoots the label to the global fore in the same light Asa and Nneka's music has made them global icons.
The world music scene does not strive on song dance-ability or popularity but on the brilliance of the artiste' lyrics and proper renditions. In both categories
.

Adekunle Gold's 'Sade' and 'Orente' clearly flaws every other artiste's in the label songs. He is clearly the dark horse and most talented of the lot. It is a little too early to judge but let's keep our fingers crossed and see what the Sade crooner offers as time goes on.

Long live Adekunle Gold,
Long live YBNL,
Long live the Nigerian Music Industry

What Has Happened To 'banana' Crooner SLYDE !

When "DaatBananaBoy" SLYDE dropped 'Banana' in 2013, everyone new something big was been brewed. Slowly it took over the clubs, DJ mixes and then our radio stations and as time went on, the buzz filtered out of Lagos into the whole country and with the remix with Timaya a HIT was borne out of Brooklyn Planet.
.Slyde's talent has always been undeniable and with a Headies' nomination, he looked like one who is definitely here to stay. Fast forward to 2015, Kiss Daniels, Korede Bello are notable names who were relatively unknown when "Banana" was already buzzing but today they are closer to been rated as A-list artistes than Slyde is to not been rated still as an upcoming artiste. As one of my newest acquaintances would say 'Slyde? That one song popular pass him name'. That sadly is the truth. Everyone who hears 'banana' today will recall the song but not everyone knows what the artiste looks like, on instagram he has just over 5,000 followers. For an artiste of his raw talent and singing ability, this is rather unfortunate. His follow up singles like Mordi, Sunita, Feel Alright( I love this song die!) And most recently Ginger have all failed to match 'Banana's success. Most annoying is the fact that these songs are 'banging' tunes! Coupled with the fact that he has not dropped any other video since 2014, it seems he is on his way to been another 'one hit wonder'. I am a big fan of Slyde and he is one of the few artistes whom I always anticipate their songs and I would definitely love to see him gain more recognition. Is Slyde's backslide a fault of a lackadaisical label? Ill-luck? Laziness for more promo by the artiste? Or is he cooking something bigger, something which takes over a year to cook? Time will tell, what do you think?

Lil Kesh : Is It Because I Love You Review

Lil Kesh has proven his mettle as a Star that has come to stay over the past 18months. He is the only or one of the few new school acts whose every track has turned out to be a hit. From Shoki to the Remixes to Gbese to Efejoku and now Is It Because I Love You. They have all gotten considerable buzz and all topped various charts around the country. Yet, questions keep been asked, is he a rapper or a singer. Lyrically and I No Well freestyle were Rap songs but the rest of his songs including the not so popular Last Card Freestyle have all seen him take a fast paced singing method which is definitely not Rap. But that is a discussion for some other day, today we focus on his latest singing which is fast becoming a street anthem - IS IT BECAUSE I LOVE YOU Ft. Patoranking. Laced on a YoungJon and Pheelz produced instrumental, this tune does not delve away from Lil Kesh's stylized pattern of music which is fast paced singing which could be mistaken for Rap. Patoranking's Patois influenced verse on the song almost seemed out of place for Kesh's style but somehow it blends into a perfect collaboration. With cheesy lyrics and a 2nd verse which had a line with a sexual undertone we definitely aren't surprised by Kesh's latest offering but are we going to get so used to his style that we start getting bored of it? Only time can tell. In the meantime, we have to admit, another hit is born and if a video drops for this, be rest assured it will top all charts. Lil Kesh is an artiste that has proven over and over again that sticking to one's original style and titling of one's song with 'unique' and 'corny' names will help one's music break ithe market. He may not be the perfect rapper with songs out there to represent HipHop, but he sure has a solid understanding of the industry and knows how to make music which will run the streets. Credits also have to go to the YBNL team on the Music business sense as most Push go to Lil Kesh as his commerciality is 2nd only to Olamide's in the group. We rate this new song 7/10. Its a Jam!
